Music and wine have long shared a rich vocabulary of descriptive terminology. Descriptors such as complexity, texture, body, warmth, flatness/sharpness, color, harshness/smoothness, wetness/dryness all communicate analogous ideas in the worlds of both wine and music. The name Sonata was chosen for having an elegant sound, as well as being familiar. Furthermore, it firmly established the link between the wine and music. The offset white bars that compose the foreground of the label are intended to both reference the five bars on the music staff, as well as convey a sense of excitement and motion. Lastly, the unusual composition of set the bottle apart from its competition.
Each label contains a short theme from one of Mozart's sonatas. Each sonata was chosen specifically for each wine based upon the intended instrumentation, and general mood of the piece. Behind the white bars lies a slender photograph of a musical instrument. A specific instrument is paired with each different varietal to match each wine's individual character. Rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is paired with a pipe organ. The Sauvignon Blanc is coupled with the image of a flute, referencing its light, airy characteristics. Finally, the Pinot Noir is matched up with the violin, alluding to the bold, complex, and delicate nature of Pinot Noir.
